The only care guide you'll ever need for your wig

Your wig is made from 100% human hair, so caring for it properly will help keep it looking soft, healthy and realistic for as long as possible.

Unlike natural hair, wigs do not receive oils from the scalp, which means hydration and gentle care are extremely important. The better you care for your wig, the longer it will maintain its quality, softness and overall lifespan.

Below is my full guide on how I recommend caring for your wig at home.

Washing Your Wig

You do not need to wash your wig as often as your natural hair. Over washing can shorten the lifespan of the hair, so it’s important to only wash when needed.

I recommend:

  • Everyday wear: approximately every 4 weeks
  • Occasional wear: you can leave much longer between washes
  • If you use a lot of styling products, dry shampoo or heavy products, you may need to wash slightly sooner

Remember — we are not washing a scalp. We are simply removing product build up from the hair itself. I personally recommend using Moroccanoil products when washing your wig.

How To Wash Your Wig

Follow these simple steps to keep your wig looking beautiful and to help the lifespan.

Step 1

Brush Before Washing

Gently brush through the hair before washing to remove any tangles.

Always start from the ends and work your way upwards.

Be especially careful around the lace area as pulling too hard can stretch, snag or rip the lace.

Step 2

Wet The Hair Correctly

Hold the wig upright with your hand underneath the lace area for support.

Always keep the hair flowing downwards whilst washing and rinsing.

Avoid bunching, scrubbing or rubbing the hair around as this can cause tangling and unnecessary stress on the knots.

The knots are especially vulnerable when wet.

Step 3

Shampoo

Use a sulphate-free, hydrating shampoo to keep your wig soft and nourished. I recommend Moroccanoil Hydration Shampoo or Pureology Hydrate Shampoo for a gentle cleanse without stripping moisture.

There’s no need to scrub the hair like natural hair. Instead, smooth the shampoo through the mid-lengths and ends using gentle downward motions, then rinse thoroughly downwards to avoid tangling.

Drying & Styling

After washing, gently squeeze excess water from the hair and wrap it in a towel, lightly pressing to absorb moisture. Avoid rubbing the hair, as this can cause unnecessary friction and affect the quality of the strands. For best results, place your wig on a wig stand or block and allow it to air dry overnight before styling.

As your wig is made from 100% human hair, it can be blow dried, curled, waved and straightened just like your own hair. However, excessive heat styling can shorten the lifespan of the hair over time, particularly with lighter blonde shades, so we always recommend using a heat protectant. To keep your wig feeling soft, hydrated and looking its best between washes, use lightweight leave-in conditioning products and avoid overloading the hair with heavy styling products that can cause build-up.

Caring For Your Lace

The lace on your wig is one of the most delicate areas and should always be handled with care. To help maintain its longevity, avoid pulling on the lace, aggressive brushing around the hairline, catching brushes or combs in the lace, or creating excessive friction when the hair is wet. As the lace is a fine material, rough handling can cause it to stretch, snag or tear over time.

If you use glue, tape or other adhesive products, always remove them gently and patiently. Avoid pulling products away from the lace forcefully, as this can place unnecessary stress on both the lace and the knots. The knots are particularly delicate and can gradually loosen with repeated friction, so taking your time during removal will help keep your wig looking its best for longer.
